There was a time when the attraction of a movie was the ability to escape from the reality of “everyday” life. Ordinary people could lose themselves in an extraordinary adventure and travel the globe without leaving the comforts of home. Now, with the accessibility of international travel, the masses have packed their suitcases and headed off, in hopes of finding their favorite movie sites. We no longer only escape to the movies, we escape into the movies! There are many incredible places on Vancouver Island and The Sunshine Coast and once you start exploring, you never know what you might discover!

For instance, did you know that Vancouver Island has a rich history in in the movie industry? During the 1930s, Oak Bay was the original “Hollywood North”. Between 1933 and 1939 fourteen films were produced locally and distributed by Columbia Pictures with stars such as Lillian Gish, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Edith Fellow, Charles Starrett, Rin Tin Tin Jr. and a young Rita Hayward. This was in order to comply with (and circumvent) the British-Quota law, that required a percentage of film distributed to the UK by American film companies to be comprised of British subjects and be shot on British or Dominion soil. Distributing these Canadian made films was cheaper for Columbia than building and maintaining a studio in London.

To date, over 225 projects including feature films, TV movies, TV series and documentaries have been shot or partially shot in various locations on the Island and the Sunshine Coast. See where most recently, scenes from Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse, X-Men trilogy, Insomnia, The Scarlet Letter, 13th Warrior or The X-Files series were shot.
